Insulin

The vital function of insulin is to facilitate the uptake of glucose into body cells. Insulin mainly exerts its effects by acting on the liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle. The insulin-independent tissues include the brain, red blood cells, liver, kidneys, and the small intestine because they do not have insulin receptors on their cell membranes and do not require insulin for glucose uptake.
